Stud And Razz Rules & How Does It Work?

Stud poker is a variation of poker where you have a mix of public cards and face down cards. So some of your cards can be seen by everyone, and others only you. This way you can make a cute of what your opponent has, but you never know whether they actually have the rest of the cards they need.

This article covers the 7-card stud games, where you get a total of 7 cards.

The history of stud poker

Stud poker is one of the older varieties of poker. 3-card stud was played over 200 years ago. Then, around 1860, the Americans played it with 5 cards during the American Civil War. Only recently, however, is modern stud poker played with 7 cards.

Nowadays 7-card stud is especially popular. Several events are played with stud at the World Series of Poker. Stud is also one of the most mixed games (where you play a new variant every few hands or minutes) such as HORSE and 8-game.

About stud poker-

7-card stud mainly comes in the following three varieties:

Stud-Hi: the player with the best hand wins the pot

Stud Hi / Lo: the players with the best and worst hands split the pot.

Razz: The player with the worst hand wins the entire pot.

The only difference between these three variants is what type of hand you win with, but because this is very important, the strategies differ considerably per variant.

Stud Hi: Stud hi is the most famous variant of a stud. You win a hand by having the best hand. The game is usually played with a fixed limit. This means that you may not bet as much as you want, such as with no limit, but only a small, predetermined increase.

A game starts with antes. Everyone puts in a pre-agreed amount. That is often only a small part of the stacks. In this way, a small pot is already grown to win. After the antes are in the middle, everyone gets three cards. Only you can see the first two of them, the third can be seen by everyone.

To start the hand, the public cards are compared. The person who has the lowest card must make an extra mandatory bet. Then the game begins. As always we go clockwise and you can raise, call or fold. If everyone has bet or folded the same amount. Then the next card follows.

From the fourth card onwards, everyone gets only one card after each card, after which a betting round follows. Ultimately you will receive 7 cards to make your combination. So there are 5 betting rounds in total. After the first 3 cards, the 4th, 5th, 6th, and last card. Finally, a showdown follows. The hands are compared and the one with the best combination wins.

Stud in short

Stud is actually very simple.

Everyone puts in antes and is dealt three cards. Two hidden, one public.

The person with the lowest public card must make a mandatory bet, after which betting round 1 follows.

After this, everyone still in the hand is dealt one more card, followed by betting round 2.

After betting rounds 3 and 4  everyone gets 1 more face down card in their hand. Then the final round follows.

When it is over, a showdown follows. Whoever has the best five-card combination wins!

After all chips have been counted and stacked, a new hand begins.

Stud hi / lo

As the name suggests, stud hi / lo is almost identical to stud hi, but it has an extra dimension. Everything is exactly the same at the beginning of the hands. Antes, lowest card pays, betting rounds up to 7th card, final betting round, etc. But then something special happens!

In stud hi/lo not only the best hand wins but also the worst hand wins! The condition for this is that 5 different cards must be under 8. An ace also counts as 1. So if you have A2345JK, you not only have a straight, but also the worst hand! (A-5)

Razz

Razz is yet another variation on the stud. There are again only two differences with the real stud. Otherwise, everything remains exactly the same in terms of betting rounds, etc.!

The person with the highest, not the lowest public card must now bet.

Only the worst hand wins. A2345XX is therefore the very best hand!

So Razz is the other end of Stud. It's a lot of fun to try out because it's the opposite of what you normally would! For example, if you start with KKK you have the worst hand.
